Mendoza: Manny versus Floyd Jr. not a done deal yet

NO, Sir. No such banana yet.

The Pacquiao-Mayweather fight isn’t on.

Until somebody yells, “It’s a done deal,” it isn’t a done deal. N’yet.

Bob Arum, who turned 78 on Dec. 7, was in Manila for four days last week to convince Pacquiao to fight Mayweather not later than March 13, 2010.

Arum, Pacquiao’s astute American promoter, said Pacquiao has “technically agreed to fight Mayweather in 147 lbs.”

He also said Freddie Roach is OK with the March 13 fight.

Earlier, Roach, Pacquiao’s genius American trainer since 2001, had wished for a May 1, 2010 fight.

That’s just nine days before an election exercise in which Pacquiao, if plans don’t go awry, is a candidate for congressman in Saranggani not far from the now-infamous Maguindanao Massacre.

If it is true that Pacquiao has agreed to the March 13 fight as alleged by Arum, what will become of Pacquiao’s congressional bid?

He’ll still go for it, the way he did in the 2007 polls—which he had miserably lost?

As I said, if he goes for both, that’d be too dangerous, if not downright suicide.

The campaign period starts Feb. 9.

If Pacquiao’s bid for Congress is on, he’d still be training on Feb. 9 if his March 13 Mayweather fight is on.

That’d be too much pressure for him to handle: training for the Mayweather fight on March 13 while at the same time thinking of a much-needed campaign for the May 10 election.

It won’t be easy training for this and thinking of the next task at hand all at once, unless you are Superman or something.

Is Pacquiao gunning for yet another world record?

Beating Mayweather and next dethroning the rulers in Saranggani – in just 5 months?

It’s a given that he’d begin training in January if the March 13 fight is sealed. Next, if he pursues his Congress dream, he could only begin campaigning for the May 10 polls after the Mayweather fight.

Can he do both?

I don’t know.

All I know is, he might be pushing his luck too far.

I can also see this scenario: Mommy Dionisia climbing up the ring on fight night and, before the first bell rings, will holler at the ref, “Estap des payt! Ay want mah Manny bak!”

What will Arum do, call 911?
